Berwick Visual Arts is committed to developing a welcoming and engaging environment of exceptional, ambitious visual art to inspire, challenge and encourage learning and enjoyment for those who work, visit and live in Berwick-upon-Tweed and the communities it serves.

We achieve this aim through a curated programme of exhibitions, artists residencies, events and projects and we are working towards the following objectives and a number of goals within each objective.

We programme exhibitions at The Granary Gallery which aims to be recognised as a venue that shows work from the best regional, national and international art collections and also The Gymnasium Gallery which we aim to continue to use as a venue for commissioning and touring high quality contemporary and conceptual work from regional, national and international artists.

Our residency programme offers the opportunity for 2 mid career artists per year to live and work in Berwick to develop their pracitce and respond to the town itself.

We have identified a number of objectives to achieve our aim and these are as follows:

Objective 1 – Programme: Commissioning, exhibiting and touring a recognised and respected high quality programme of visual art exhibitions and residencies by professional artists that have regional, national and international reach.

Objective 2 – Learning and Engagement: Delivering a strong learning and engagement programme which creates accessible opportunities for learning, education and increased understanding of contemporary art for people who visit, live and work in Berwick-upon-Tweed.

Objective 3 – Marketing: Have a developed understanding of our users and non-users to ensure that our programming, learning and marketing tools meet the expectations and needs to those who visit, live and work in Berwick-upon-Tweed.

Objective 4 – Fundraising: Delivering the aspirations of Berwick Visual Arts and its programme through a mix of public, private and self-generated income and is not solely reliant on public funding.

Objective 5 – Evaluation: Has robust evaluation mechanisms in place to inform our future working that evidences and advocates the positive benefits of the work we are delivering.
