I’m an animator and filmmaker working mainly in the North East, North West, Cumbria and Yorkshire. My time is split between collaborative projects with artists, schools, community groups, and education and arts organisations, creating independent film work, artist’s residencies and developing film content for online education resources.
Since 2001 I have worked on animation and film projects in a variety of locations and venues including schools, communities, museums, prisons, businesses and outdoor spaces. Projects have involved different groups of participants from Early Years groups to KS4 students, community organisations, youth groups, asylum seekers, children, adults with learning difficulties and older people. I have facilitated and managed summer schools that have lasted one or two weeks, weekly school-based sessions exploring curriculum topics, after school clubs, evening sessions with youth clubs, and long-term projects with galleries, museums and communities. I am an Arts Award Discover/Explore, Bronze and Silver Advisor and regularly work with teachers and youth workers to deliver projects as part of Arts Award.
I design projects to suit the skills and abilities of the participants involved and often cover various animation styles (including drawn, model, cut-out, abstract/experimental), filmmaking (including green screen and editing), and digital arts using tablets, apps and digital photography. The creative production stages include creative writing, storyboarding and drawing, audio recording, designing, making and building, filming and photography, and post-production. Participants use animation and film to explore a variety of themes from curriculum topics such as history, science and maths to local culture and heritage to mental health and personal stories. I develop projects that place importance on the need to work as a team and to listen to the ideas of others. Participants are encouraged to explore the various roles and responsibilities involved in the film making process.
My own animated work is often inspired by heritage and local history. I mainly work with traditional animation techniques – drawn, cut-out, model. I am also interested in experimenting with the animation process and challenging the idea of animation being confined to a studio. I like to create work out and about on location and use apps and tablets which allow me to take a mobile studio anywhere.
My independent film work and collaborative productions have been shown and displayed at The Sage Gateshead, Northumbria University, Sunderland Air Show, MICE (International Exhibition of Educational Cinema) in Valencia, Skopelos International Film Festival for Youth, Locomotion NRM Shildon, The Royal School of Art, Flip Animation Festival, Northern Print Studios, Carlisle’s Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery and Animated Exeter.
