This exhibition has been created to complement ‘Surface Deep’, but with the focus on two-dimensional works on art. Paintings, drawings, prints, tapestries and embroideries will be shown in a rich, multi-layered display of pattern, surfaces, colour and narrative.

Present Continuous is the first comprehensive monographic exhibition in the UK by renowned filmmaker Omer Fast.
Best known for video works that question the conventions of storytelling, media reportage and historical representation, Fast employs cinematic techniques and complex narrative structures to explore the ways stories, and consequently history and identity, are formed. Undermining the divide between ‘reality’ and ‘representation’ and between document and artifice, his practice also interrogates the potential truthfulness of images.

This exhibition, divided over BALTIC’s two largest floors, includes several recent and new installations and projection-based works. 5,000 Feet is the Best 2011, is underpinned by an interview Fast conducted with a former operator of Predator drones. The 30-minute film weaves together the operator’s account of his life and work along with scenes depicting crimes in and around Las Vegas.

CNN Concatenated 2002 is an 18-minute-long video collage edited from thousands of individual words spoken by presenters on the Cable News Network. The footage is reconstructed to form a disconcerting poetic narrative with an underlying sense of threat. The exhibition will also include Everything that Rises Must Converge 2013, a film that presents ‘a-day-in-the-life’ of four adult film performers and a new commission that will be shown for the first time internationally, Spring 2016. Despite their often overt political content, the narrative constructions and deviations of Fast’s videos, moving effortlessly from thriller, to documentary to comedy, ensure they transcend the issues he at first seems to address.

The exhibition is organised in collaboration with Jeu de Paume, Paris and KUNSTEN, Aalborg. A fully illustrated exhibition catalogue with new essays is available from BALTIC Shop.

From Temple to Home: Celebrating Ganesha @ The Bowes Museum | Barnard Castle | United Kingdom

This vibrant, colourful exhibition from the British Museum centres on a large stone sculpture of the elephant-headed god Ganesha, depicted standing on a lotus petal. The arch supporting the figure is decorated with the mask of a lion, flanked by aquatic monsters.

Key objects include a painting showing Ganesha riding his mount, the rat ‘Vahana’, rare photographs, woodcuts and porcelain figures revealing different aspects of the iconography around this elephant-headed god.

GemArts will be working with our friends at the Bowes Museum to spread the word while From Temple to Home: Celebrating Ganesha is on display.

As we prepare to wave goodbye to Painting with Rainbows – A Michael Foreman Exhibition help us to tackle All That Rubbish by junk modelling and upcycling galore.  Dinosaurs of all shapes and sizes are invited to stomp down to the Ouseburn as we think about the natural world with the help of Michael Foreman’s Dinosaurs and All That Rubbish.  Add your junk scales to a GIANT T-Rex and build your very own dinosaur to take home. Little dinos can experiment with plasticine to create their own fossilised dinosaur prints.

Colin Rose will be exhibiting a selection of works in the gallery inspired by his use of earth and charcoal together when working in Australia. The exhibition of recent work, presents Colin’s interest in using these natural materials with their intensity and contrast of colour and the richness they offer for making drawings.

Colin is leading a sculpture tour on Saturday 18 June to highlight some of the Public sculpture works he has made which are located in Gateshead.
